New Caledonia is a country. New Caledonia is a French overseas territory situated 1,210 kilometers east of Australia in the Southwest Pacific. Geography
The 'Grande Terre' is a 400-kilometer long island containing 25% of the world's nickel reserves. The landscape is dominated by red peridotite soil and perfectly vertical Araucaria columnaris pines. The climate stays between 20°C and 27°C year-round, regulated by the world's largest lagoon which covers 24,000 square kilometers of turquoise water.
History
On June 26, 1988, the Matignon Accords were signed in Paris by Jean-Marie Tjibaou and Jacques Lafleur. This pivotal handshake ended the 1984–1988 civil unrest, known as 'Les Événements.' The agreement established a 10-year period of development and recognized Kanak cultural identity, creating a legal framework for shared sovereignty and lasting peace through the subsequent 1998 Nouméa Accord.
